THE RILKING ZINE
I MADE THE PIECE AS A MEMORIAL TO THE FIRST FRIEND OF MINE TO DIE IN THE AIDS PANDEMIC. HIS NAME WAS DAVID GARFINKEL, AND HE WAS A REALLY TALENTED ACTOR, AN OUTRAGEOUSLY ENTERTAINING AND BRILLIANT FRIEND, WHO DIED IN 1984 AT AGE 26. THE DAY I GOT THE PHONE CALL TELLING ME HE HAD DIED, I HAD HAPPENED TO BE READING A NEW TRANSLATION OF RILKE’S SONNETS TO ORPHEUS. IN 1990 I MADE A PIECE FOR HIM. IT WAS USED AS THE SCORE OF A DANCE FOR THE WASHINGTON BALLET, AND THE RECORDING IS THE TITLE TRACK ON MY FIRST CD, OVERSTEPPING.
ALONG WITH EXCERPTS OF RILKE IN BOTH GERMAN AND ENGLISH, YOU’LL HEAR SAMPLED SOUNDS OF THE BERLIN WALL BEING CHISELED DOWN, AND A BIT OF ROSENKAVALIER, BECAUSE DAVID ONCE INSISTED THAT I PLAY THE BLOWOUT SEXY CLIMAX AT 6 AM ON THE RADIO WHEN I WAS A STUDENT DJ. NOT EXACTLY MUSIC TO BRUSH YOUR TEETH BY, BUT WHATEVER ;-) -EVE BEglarian
